Michael Anne Tolan

Michael Anne Tolan, native of Avon, Indiana, is the current saxophone instructor for the Avon Community School Corporation and teaches students in the surround area, as well as online. In the Summer and Fall, she works with the Avon Marching Black and Gold. In addition to teaching saxophone, Michael Anne is pursuing a Doctor of Musical Arts at West Virginia University under the tutelage of Dr. Michael Ibrahim.  She is working on her dissertation "Injuries Common to Saxophonists and Their Prevention: A Source for Students, Educators, and Performers" in Avon, Indiana, she is the saxophone instructor for the Avon Community School Corporation. Michael Anne finished her masters in music at Indiana State University, under Dr. Paul Bro. In addition to her studies at ISU, she worked as a Graduate Assistant and a music instructor for the ISU Community School of Arts. She earned a Bachelor of Music in performance and a minor in Instrumental Jazz Studies from DePauw University 2011, where she studied with Mr. Scotty Stepp. While at DePauw, she studied one semester in The Netherlands at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam. It is there she had the opportunity to study with both Willem van Merwijk and Arno Bornkamp.

While attending these universities, Michael Anne has performed in multiple quartets, jazz
ensembles and combos, and large wind ensembles. As an ensemble member, she had the opportunity to work with composers Chen Yi, Joan Tower, Eric Ewazen, and Christopher Theofanadis. She was also part of the recording project Starsplitter as a member of the DePauw University Band under Craig Paré. Michael Anne has also had the opportunity to play pieces such as Prokofiev's Lieutenant Kijé, Massenet's Va! Laisse couler Mes Larmes, and Martin's Ballade for Flute with the ISU University Symphony. She recently premiered Tachyonic Ripples by Joshua Elmore at the 2016 NASA Biennial. She also performed at the Gala of the 71st Annual Meeting of American Cleft-Craniofacial Association and in 2013 she performed at the Regional 5 NASA Conference in Bowling Green.

When not doing all things music, Michael Anne is hanging out with her three dogs Lucky,
Remus, and Alastor.
